This January, The History Channel (an American cable television channel) initiated a design and engineering competition called “City of the future”. Together with sponsors Infiniti and IBM architects and designers from all over the United States were challenged to compete in City of the Future competitions in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Atlanta.

In the light of our PerfectCity Charter and the poll on City Architecture, we would like to go to detail on another factor. After having brought articles on City History and Architectural Styles, we are focussing on Visual Excitement. Visual Excitement is the feeling that people get when they see beautiful or interesting buildings. This maybe because of the scale of the building (as in it is just huge) or it may be because it is very intricate design that leaves a person in awe as to how it was built.

So, we were looking for a ranking of the most beautiful cities of the world. If a city is beautiful, it must be visually exciting! But we did not find a representative survey or a ranking. What we found were statements of people with different opinions: some named Sydney or Paris to be the most beautiful cities of the world, other named Vancouver, Isfahan, Hamburg, New York, Cape Town…

In 2008 a special monument celebrates its 50th anniversary. The monument we are talking about is the Atomium in Brussels, Belgium.

Even though the Atomium was not intended to survive the Exhibition of 1958 and was originally planned to remain standing only six months, the monument has been an impressive and amazing sight of Brussels for 50 years.

Designed by the Belgian engineer André Waterkeyn for the International Exhibition of Brussels in 1958 the Atomium is a structure that is half way between sculpture and architecture, symbolising with the help of nine atoms a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times.

After bringing together the factors of City Architecture concerning our PerfectCity Charter "The City of The Future" we were asking ourselves which actually is the most modern architectural style.

So we tracked the timeline of architectural styles from 1750 until the present day and found out that a current movement in architecture is Blobitecture. Blobitecture from blob architecture, blobism or blobismus is curvy architecture, fluid protoplasmic shapes that completely redefine what a building ought to look like. That means buildings have an organic, amoeba-shaped, bulging form.
The term ‘blob architecture’ already was in vogue in the mid-1990s but the word blobitecture first appeared in print in 2002 in the New York Times.

This year BusinessWeek and Architectural Record joined for the 10th time to recognize successful collaborations of great architects and great business. Although the jury selected only 10 buildings as this year’s winners and finalists, these projects make it clear that architecture can improve any kind of business. Whether it’s a law firm, a federal service, a museum, a manufacturer, a sports team, a performance company, a federal service, or a Web brand conglomerate, smart businesses thrive on smart design solutions.

Urban housing appears to be one of the leading issues when it comes to city design and architecture. More than any other building type it forms the backbone of the urban fabric. More than any other building type it helps to illustrate the relation between the (urban) whole and the (architectural) parts. However, this relation between the individual house and the wider context is not that simple: what really makes for example the difference between the respective streetscapes of -let’s say- Paris or London? What is due to the design of the houses and what to the network structure of the city? The question is therefore how to approach and analyse such a complex topic.

With the book review on “Green Building: Konzepte für nachhaltige Architektur”, the authors provided a slight insight into the topic of Green Building. Now let’s go on this subject and focus on Green Buildings, that are buildings that can produce a certain amount of energy themselves.

First of all, what does it mean to build green? Green or sustainable building is the practice of building/creating healthier, environmental-friendlier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition. By considering the complete building life cycle, green buildings can provide great environmental, economic, and social benefits.

Dear Mr. Oyeku, what is your field of practice/interest in urban design?

My interest is in urban planning and management. Basically, my field of practice contributes to efficient urban land use planning and effective  control of urban land use in the urban systems. For a city to be liveable and to serve its functions as engine of growth and catalyst of development, its important to ensure efficient urban planning and control, this will certainly provide a safe , clean, healthy and aesthetically pleasing urban environment. In the expansion of urban centres, the understanding of the spatial structure of the urban systems and the challenges associated with their development is very crucial in order to craft relevant strategies for planning and management of the cities.

Welcome to www.ourbania.com

As of 1 October 2007 www.ourbania.com, a new commercial real estate community, is online. Ourbania is focussing on architects, urban planners, investors and real estate professionals.

In Ourbania you can present your favourite buildings, so-called urban items, with details and photos from flickr (located on google.maps). All registered community members (citizens) are able to add further information and comments to the projects and permitted to valuate them. Ourbania includes photos of the projects and displays them using google.maps as an interactive commercial real estate map.
Ourbania is intended to be the virtual venue for the real estate sector. It offers a global directory for commercial real estate projects and is expected to be constantly expanding. Target-specific searches for global projects are enabled by a powerful filter. Ourbania citizens will create an online metropolis with hundreds of thousands of crosslinks between people and buildings. You can meet other people to share thoughts and ideas about buildings and landmarks.

The community is founded by mediaman GmbH and Eurohypo AG.

Take a look at www.ourbania.com. You are welcome to join the community and create your urban item!
