According to a study by Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI) and private bank Berenberg Bank, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart have the best prospects of German major cities. In contrast, industrial cities like Gelsenkirchen, Wuppertal and Chemnitz come last in respect to future prospects.

In light of recent trends in urbanisation, the companies decided to analyse the 30 biggest cities in Germany. Another reason for focussing on these cities is, according to Dr. Hans-Walter Peters, Co-owner of Berenberg Bank, that these cities have a significant impact on economic success of the whole of Germany.

Bochum, located in Germany’s Ruhr area between the cities of Essen and Dortmund, has a population of approx. 382.000 and a population density of 2,658 per square kilometre. For more infos click here.

It has been a neck-and-neck race with Frankfurt/Main till the very end! Germany’s capital Berlin made it to rank 3 of the world’s ugliest cities. With Kiel on 4th place, you voted 4 German cities into the top 5 of the ugliest cities of the world. Lagos, a city with a population between 10.5-15 million, was ranked 5th.

„Cities - Architecture and Society“. Die zehnte internationale Architekturausstellung vergangenen Jahres in Venedig gab das Jahrtausendthema vor. Nicht dass dieses, Fakt wie Motto, bis dato ein Geheimnis gewesen wäre, aber kaum eine Veranstaltung zieht eben so viel Aufmerksamkeit der internationalen Planerschar auf sich wie die Biennale der Lagunenstadt, in die alle lieber reisen als nach Bochum oder Roanne. On April 11th 2006, the EU jury recommended that the title of European Capital of Culture 2010 will be awarded to the Ruhr area (German Rhurgebiet). Essen had gone into the running representing the whole region and had to compeed against around 20 other cities and towns, which also had applied for the title. (more…)

Two former airports, a brownfield site, the land under a railway bridge and a patch of inner city wasteland: the urban landscape of these plots of was recognised and commended at the International Urban Landscape Award ceremony. Eurohypo worked together with the journal “Topos” and the magazine “Architektur & Wohnen” to launch the prize which was awarded for the first time year. (more…)
