This dossier sums up the discussions about Urban Design in the light of the development of the PerfectCity Charter.

In addition to the valuable definitions and the scope of Urban Design as presented by the experts Robert Schäfer and Niyi Oyeku the most important facets of urban design were extracted by PerfectCity readers in a poll.

 

As shown in the figure, Urban Structure is considered to be the leading factor in that poll. The scope and terminology of Urban Structure was issued in a special article.

Here, the basic idea of Urban Structure as an approach with knowledge interest in how cities grow into the current state and three basic models could be identified.In this context, the concept and approach of shared space  touches on how to reduce the negative impacts of traffic in cities.

Moreover, the following stimulating issues emerged:

With the overall goal to ensure the sustainability of the use of the natural and human environments, planning and management of the environment using G.I.S. appears relevant and beneficial.

Further, the use of city analysis software allows analyzing cities in the virtual space and hence fosters co-operation of the urban design community

worldwide. Since Climate, Water Supply, Energy and Food represent
challenges for the future, the need for innovative concepts in terms of Green Urban Design increases.

Valuable insights into the latest urban design practice and outstandingly innovative Urban Design projects were presented and up for public voting in the IULA Special.
