City of Frankfurt and Eurohypo AG announce pupil competition "PerfectFrankfurt2020" on PerfectCity.
How will people live, work and spend their leisure time in Frankfurt by 2020? What will Frankfurt’s urban face look like? Will Frankfurt remain a tolerant and cosmopolitan city? Answers to these and many other future questions still need to be found, so that the Main metropolis remains a modern, liveable city within the next twenty till thirty years.
To contribute to this discussion, the German city Frankfurt/Main and Eurohypo AG have created a pupil competition called “PerfectFrankfurt 2020” on PerfectCity. This competition challenges young people to generate ideas for the city of tomorrow. Pupils in the fifth grade and up, from any school in Frankfurt can take part individually, in a group or as an entire class. Frankfurt mayor Petra Roth says “Within our competition it is not urban planners, architects or politicians that are in demand, but young people. They have a lot of imagination, creativity and are not afraid to take risks to find solutions." Bernd Knobloch, CEO of Eurohypo, regards Frankfurt as an ideal environment for the competition: "Frankfurt is an international, cosmopolitan and innovative city - that is exactly the right place to create new ideas."
There is a large variety of topics for "Perfect Frankfurt 2020": For instance opportunities and problems of multicultural coexistence, environmental issues, transport concepts, future of work in the city or ideas to how Frankfurt can handle the challenge of an ageing population.
Contributions can be in a number of different forms, including articles, reports interviews, poems, short stories, video clips, music productions, drawings, plans or self-designed websites.
The deadline for submission is the 15th of October 2008. Contributions can be handed in through info@perfectcity.net. A panel of ten (journalists, teachers, entrepreneurs, artists and students) will select the best projects among all entries. Winners will be rewarded with attractive prices. In addition, there will be a winner selected by PerfectFrankfurt readers. More information about this competition is available at PerfectFrankfurt .

Dear Norman,
why should people spend there leisure time outside Frankfurt? Frankfurt offers a lot of different possibilities and is a regional centre.
I think more people will spend there time in Frankfurt in 2020.
Lena
Hi Lena, Frankfurt am Main offers a lot, there are fantastic cultural opportunities and other activities on offer, if you have money. Unfortunately the part of society that is ageing or multicultural (or those who have a family) will not be able to afford these offers.
What Frankfurt does not have is centres for alternative culture, as in an oriental market or open art, music and leisure centres where you can just hang out, mix and be creative (for example kids learning skills from bored pensioned handwerker or working on ideas with artists), although it does invest in certain projects such as Fest der Kulturen.
Multicultural and demographic factors can drive a city if you manage to bring them together in a place and also if you are prepared to listen to the people and not pander to the very strong financial interests driving this town.
I understand Norman, Frankfurt is a very fast moving town, it is not easy to find peace here and unfortunately there are no mountains or sea nor large lakes nearby. Sometimes you feel the need to get out.
The redesign of the Mainufer has been a great step in the right direction. There is a need for more alternative cultural activity there like small theatre festivals or art shows, without making it too hectic. There is still a lot of potential for development of alternative ideas along the Main especially the Osthafen, but my fears are that this corner of town will become another expensive and clean but culturally dead financial and living area.
And somebody has to get rid of the beergarden-boats under the Eisener Steg, they are a terrible eyesore to us and all the tourists visiting our pretty town.
