In the light of the development of the Charter City of the Future, this remark on Urban Design and environment aims to broaden the discussion and provide some inspiration for further thoughts. Considering that more than half of the human population will be living in urban areas by 2008 - and this trend is increasing - environmental issues are gaining importance. But where does "Green Urban Design" start and where does it end?

The ecological footprint of cities has effects: there are less and less places on earth that are uneffected by the dynamics of cities. For example, from 10-13 February 2008, the Green Building Council of Australia and the Property Council of Australia will host "Green Cities 08: What’s Possible Now?" Here, topics include Landscaping, Green Roofs and Planning for Climate Change.

Besides so-called Greenscrapers - these are buildings that can produce a certain amount of energy themselves and will be presented in more detail in issue no.2 of the Charter - there is also the idea of vertical farming. This concept aims to provide a solution to the needs of the urban species - urban renewal, sustainable production of a reliable and manifold food supply, and the eventual repair of ecosystems that have been sacrificed for horizontal farming.

What is your understanding of "Green Urban Design"? We look forward to your interesting ideas, viewpoints and opinions!
