Last week the government of Schleswig Holstein (Germany) decided to agree to the controversial project of building a bridge between the island of Fehmarn in Germany and the city of Roedby in Denmark. The highway+railroad containing bridge will shorten the distance between Copenhagen and Hamburg about 180 kilometers by a distance of 20 kilometers over the baltic sea.
According to german newspapers the project will cost about 5 bn Euros, prefinanced by German and Danish governments. Most criticism comes from environmentalists who believe that the routes several birds choose for travelling might be disturbed.
Now its to the german government to decide whether building the bridge or not, after all the initiative was done by the Danish government wich is looking forward to an economic improvement through this bridge.

think, we need the bridge. I understand all the problems with the birds, but they will find new way. It is not even sure, they will be disturbed.

I think so too! If you look at the Öresund bridge between Denmark and Sweden, it shows that it is very valuable, not only for travelling - also in terms of economic aspects: thousands travel each day between Copenhagen and Malmö to their workplaces. Exchange of human capital - enabled by a bridge!

The bridge- connection between denmark and germany is an economical question. As greg said, people are able to get to their workplaces even faster than before. Denmark itself is interested to be more connected to surrounding countries, the transport of goods would be more easier and maybe the social connection between both countries too. The problem of crossing birds might be serious, but it’s an old and never ending story.
Remember the airbus project and the enlargement of airfields.
Nobody can stop economical development and urbanisation.
Economydevelopment mostly doesn’t care about environmental protection.
