2006 marks the third time the European Landscape Award has been granted on the occasion of the 2007 Urban Design Fair in Munich on 19 January. This time the distinction went to the landscape architecture firm of GROSS.MAX. in Edinburgh.
Topos, in collaboration with Bruns Pflanzen of Bad Zwischenahn, is thus honouring a team of landscape architects who, though located on the European periphery, are successfully working in many countries all over Europe.
The Topos editorial team selected GROSS.MAX. for their individual design concepts and competition entries that exhibit a creative approach specific to this office. Aesthetic experimentation and change of scenery are the keywords with which GROSS.MAX., as one of the few innovative landscape architecture firms in the United Kingdom, is currently also flourishing in the dynamic metropolis of London.
The European Landscape Award, granted by Topos and sponsored by Bruns Pflanzen, was previously presented to the practices of Stig L. Anderson in Copenhagen (2002) and Karres en Brands in Hilversum near Amsterdam (2004). Like both of their predecessors, GROSS.MAX. stands for a group of landscape architects who cultivate an unmistakable style and, often in fruitful collaboration with architects and urban planners, manage to translate it into urban projects. With their innovative approaches, these firms provide the profession with new impetus and make important contributions to the discourse on theory. They play a major part in shaping the style of landscape architecture in the early 21st century.
